Do search engines descriminate against free webhosting sites?

I have a website up on one of those free web-hosting sites. Now i have my own domain name which i have to pay for every year, but the fee is pretty good. I now need to put up a website under my own domain name but don't feel like paying a monthly fee for hosting. Do search engines discriminate against free hosted sites? What if i do all i can to drive traffic to my site, such as good content on the site, and writing relevant articles on the internet (such as at ezine.com) with a link to my site? Will i still be hard to find just because its a free site?

Actually the price that you pay for web hosting doesn't matter because what they really care is actually the content that you put on your website & the amount of backlinks that your webpage has.
